Eden's gates

“I think……I’m in love with you.” Nishikido Ryo held the stalk of wild chrysanthemum in his hand and he smiled at Uchi. A smile that was contradicting the nature of his words, a smile of bitterness and Uchi Hiroki simply stood there, his hair dancing in the wind and his feet unmoving on the field of yellow wild flowers that blended into the flaring sunset.

“In love with me?” Uchi Hiroki couldn’t keep the incredulity and disbelief from his voice. He knew Nishikido Ryo was infatuated with him but he never thought that he would hear such a confession from Nishikido Ryo, heir apparent to Nishikido Holdings. They lived in separate worlds, Ryo in his world of ease and comfort, where his future was laid out waiting for him while Uchi lived in “Eden” where everyday was the same – different men who wanted the same things from him, a place of decadence and the only home Uchi had never known since he started prostituting himself at the age of fifteen.

He looked at the chrysanthemum in Ryo’s hands and he thought he understood men. Understood how to make them happy, understood how to make them lust for something that was just beyond their reach but he didn’t get Nishikido Ryo. At all. He thought men hated confessions of love because they were like declarations of their vulnerability and weaknesses.

“I’ve got men who say they’re in love with me, everyday.” Uchi said, a taunting smile on his face as he cocked his head slightly.

Ryo didn’t get angered by Uchi. He simply reached over for Uchi’s hand, opened it and placed the stalk of chrysanthemum on his open palm.

“For you.”

“Why isn’t it a rose? Or something more expensive like a lily? I thought men all like to use flowers as their weaponry to melt people’s hearts. Why is it a chrysanthemum?”

A smile blossomed on Ryo’s face, far more beautiful than any flower in full bloom. “Because it’s pure and real.”

Uchi couldn’t help the barbed words of sarcasm that surfaced from his mouth. “That is just the opposite of me. I’m artificial and dirty.”

And even though he said that, he curled his fingers gently around the lone stalk of flower.

“Do you like it?” Ryo’s voice was so soft and tender as though it belonged to a beautiful and faraway dream. It was a dream, and because it was a dream, Uchi felt like crying because eventually everyone woke up from their dreams and nightmares.

He bit down lightly on his lip and looked up at Ryo, his eyes wary and searching. “Are you going to give me one everyday?”

“A little greedy, aren’t you?” Laughter was etched on his face as his grin widened and he leaned forward, pressing his lips teasingly against Uchi’s in a soft, lingering kiss.

The sunset looked down on both of them and the wind caressed their hair gently. In the sage green of the open plain, the flowers started swaying and from afar, they looked like gentle ripples.

And Uchi Hiroki held the flower in his hands, unwilling to use too much force because it would crush the fragile beauty of it. It was just like this dream he was in now, with Ryo looking into his eyes. He wanted so badly to cling and hold onto it but to wish was to hurt and he only wished this dream would last a little longer before it shatter into nothingness.

On his lips was the remnants of Ryo’s warmth.

Indeed, he was too greedy……because he was wishing for more.

“Hiroki, stop working at ‘Eden’. Be with me, I’ll take care of you.”

At the driveway of ‘Eden’, Uchi Hiroki found himself tightly embraced in the lean arms of Nishikido Ryo and the neon lights that draped the trees were already lit, adding a touch of beauty to the dim darkness of the night. Immaculately-groomed men were already entering the beckoning doors of ‘Eden’, the doors that led into a world of debauchery and sinful pleasures.

Uchi rested his head on Ryo’s shoulders and he looked numbly at the familiar scene playing out in front of him. The neon lights were like numerous pairs of malicious eyes, reminding him of his rightful place, telling him that ‘Eden’ was the world he inhabited and belonged to. But at this point, when his heart was right on the verge of unlocking and handing itself to the person who was holding him so gently, he couldn’t deny that he wanted to nod his head and say ‘yes’. That maybe, all he wanted was to lay his head on Ryo’s shoulder and savour this feeling of being protected, for as long as he could.

“Leave ‘Eden’. If you agree, I’ll take you away immediately.” Ryo sensed the uncertainty of Uchi and he repeated his promise. He brushed his lips against Uchi and he realised that there was no trace of warmth on his delicate skin.

“I have to go….” Uchi said with a little sigh, as he extradicated himself from Ryo’s arms. He closed the car door and started walking towards the graceful arches of the gilded door to ‘Eden’. Glancing at Uchi’s frail frame, Ryo felt an unprecedented pain slicing into his heart, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. Uchi didn’t like that place at all, he could see that but why? Why did he refuse to leave?

--

“Hiroki, today you must accompany me.”

“Hiroki, I miss you so much. I’ve already booked you for the night.”

Uchi had not even reached the door of ‘Eden’ when he was surrounded by the clients vying for his attention. Lustful eyes caressed his skin and hands rested on his shoulders in a casual show of ownership.

Dwarfed by the crowd gathered around him, Uchi turned slightly in the direction of Ryo’s black, sleek car shadowed in the distance. Those ebony eyes gazed penetratingly into Ryo’s and the endless and infinite sorrow in the depths of those eyes left Ryo unshaken. He almost wanted to run to Uchi and lead him away. To where, it didn’t matter, as long as it was away from this place that was the source of his suffering. As if he knew the thought that crossed Ryo’s mind, Uchi raised his hand in an attempt to deter Ryo. With the chrysanthemum in his hand and the melancholic smile that graced his lips, Uchi was so beautiful that it left Ryo momentarily stunned.

But what should have been a poetically beautiful scene was heartbreakingly brief. Uchi turned his back and entered ‘Eden’, followed by the crowd of admirers. Behind the windscreen, Ryo’s eyes followed Uchi and this time, he didn’t enter ‘Eden’. He sat in the confines of his car, in the rich leathery seats and he didn’t leave. It was torture, being outside and wondering what was happening on the inside but it was his own warped way of accompanying Uchi through his pain. And even if it was torture, it was nothing compared to Uchi who was on the inside, looking out at the wide open expanse of the world and never being able to expand his clipped wings and fly out.

Looking at the wilted, dried petals of the shrivelled chrysanthemum, Uchi placed it against his chest. Then he smiled because he remembered looking at the shadows on the field when he was hugged by Ryo. He was pressed so tightly into Ryo’s body that their shadow had appeared as one. Of course, it was a lie wrapped up with layers of sweetness to hide the underlying bitterness. They were together but apart. Close but never one.

Uchi crushed the flower in his hands. Crushed it mercilessly, just before the tears started to fall.
